Anyone know if this is an early K98 sling? There are no markings, and it is 53 inches long. Many thanks to all for looking.

Not too long ago I got a three hundred round battle pack of AP/tracer ammo. It is DWM mfg, dated 1937. Have any of you shot any of this configuration ammo? The pack has been opened(not me), and looks pristine. I read that the tracer compound is no longer viable. But the AP part would be ok. I was wondering if I should try it out, since it's already been opened. As far as I know, it's the largest factory loaded ap caliber, the .50 being next, available to regular shooters. Thanks!

After refurbing some older rifles (started with a 1943 Mossberg M44 US sniper training rifle and then did a Mosin Nagant M91) I bought my first Mauser K98. Being new to these rifles I have several questions.

The reciever is marker "243" and "1939". Serial number is 9664. The S/N is marked in several places along with Waffenampt 26s...on the reciever, the sights, trigger gaurd and the floor plate. The bolt does not match and has a serial number "7845e" with Waffenampt 77's. The fellow who sold me the gun said it was a veteran bringback, but I can see an import mark on the underside of the barrel..."K98 German 8mm, St. Albans VT". Someone attempted to sand this out, which is a shame. The gun was covered with what I assume was Russian shellac...the wood was all dark reddish brown and the shellac was on or in alot of the metal parts as well. From what I have read the 243 indicates it was produced at the Borsigwalde arsenal in Berlin.

First question is on the stock...is this a laminated stock...it certainly appears to be to me (see pictures)? The seller told me it was solid walnut. He had a Yugo post war Mauser (1948) that was quite a bit lighter and he said it was the walnut that made this one heavier. If it is a laminated stock, would this have been 1939 period? Both the hand grip and the stock have the serial number "9664" stamped inside. The stock has a very faint large Waffenamt on butt (same side as the bolt). Not easy to see in the picture but it is there. It was not visible until the Russian shellac was stripped off. There is also a large ink stamping under the butt plate that appears to read "5.18.39 K1"...could this be a date?

Next question is on the elevation sight...it has scales on both sides? Researching it a bit, I found an article in an old magazine (The American Rifleman April 1955) that explains that this was World War I vintage and that one scale was for a lower grain ammunition. Is this common and if so might it indicate that this gun was WWI vintage and refurbed for WWII? If it is a refurb why would the reciever be plainly marked "1939"...it does not appear that any old numbers / dates were crossed off or replaced?

Another question I have, has to do with the front sight. It does not have obvious groves or slots along the bottom where it is attached to the barrel and thus does not appear that it could capture a hood...were there models on which one cannot put a hood on the front blade sight?

And finally..there are some markings on the reciever underside That I do not understand...what do "240 39 Dö" and "bY" indicate?

After gentle clean-up my plan is to reblue the metal, taking care not to lose any of the original markings, focusing on repairing areas buffed or sanded by previous owner(s). I will darken the stock by applying boiled linseed oil...several coats to give it a shine but not so much to take away from it's weathered appearance.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. If guns could only talk!
In my rifle its the magazine follower and the spring in the bolt stop. Does anyone have the same? Do you think its a factor of the alloy used in these components, or is it just the batch of blueing that came out that colour. Eugen.

I have also heard that the best lubricant for the bolt rail is "motor oil". Sounds weird.
Please help this ignorant.

Disclaimer: This is an LSR Project, I am not passing this rifle off as 100% original and the rifle is not for sale.

Well after six months, the assistance of members of this forum and others, I have finally identified and have almost completed my BCD 4 LSR project.

The original rifle was a Czech/East German refurb bcd 4 three holed thick walled reciever.

I added a repro mount, incorrect scope (came with the mount and I am saving/looking for a proper scope), repro sniper saftey, repro sniper buttplate, modified original stock (ligthly sanded-not by me, but with original small eagle big H), and a repro LSR scope can with accessories.

End of the day a reasonable sniper clone.

I saved the original stock and did not tap the three holed reciever and I used a white crayon to highlight markings. I maintained the original blueing and had to find a replacement trigger guard as it came with a Czech winter trigger guard. The mount and stock took some fitting but end of the day I am relatively happy.

Any comments are welcome.

Feedback is welcome.

When I was 12 years old (now 41) I was given 4 rounds of red colored wooden bullets. They were given to me by our mail-man who told me that he picked them up on Omaha beach on June 8, 1944.
They were in a box, which he did not give me.
Now I would like to find an original box to put them in.I don't know the details of the verbiage which should be on the box other than "Platzpatronen" and "P.490". Could anyone out there help me. All of you are probably much more adept at this than I am.

Basically I just bought a nice K98 for $330 from a gentleman who was selling off his grandpa's old collection and just wanted to get rid of everything. I almost passed over it as another Russian capture, but then noticed no import mark and that all of the numbers were matching. At that price I figured I couldn't go wrong, so I picked it up the next day. It appears good at first glance (to someone who knows little to nothing about K98's) but there are some issues with the font, mainly on the bolt handle.

I couldn't take the best pictures (my camera here at my apartment is quite old and crappy, ha!) but here is my attempt to get some of the main marks photographed.

On Gunboards, the main problem people are having with the rifle is the bolt handle, stock number, and the flat buttplate it has on this later production rifle. The buttplate is numbered to the rifle though, and upon removing it from the stock it seemed evident it had been on it for some time, as the adhesive or rust on the back of the buttplate lined up with the stuff on the stock (kinda hard to explain).

Anyway, anyone have any idea what's going on here? I'm hoping to maybe get better pictures this weekend or the middle of next week at the latest. Thanks everyone!

Hey guys,

For a long while I've been setting up a RC BNZ 1943 kar98k for a repro LSR mount and scope. The mount has a spacer to compensate for the standard kar98k receiver, instead of having to find a real LSR kar98k with the thickened receiver. However, since i am using a standard kar98k, I will have to drill and tap three holes. Sounded easy a while back, but I had assumed that German receivers were surface hardened, not thru-hardened. Turns out kar98k receivers are typically thru-hardened, so tapping now seems impossible.

For those who have heard of Others doing this project, what can be done? Should i have the receiver drilled and have tapped inserts welded in?

For those of you who think this is blasphemous, I will be trying to make the gun look as ww2 as possible. I will be using it for target shooting and WW2 reenacting. Not using sporting scopes. :)

Thanks for what you come up with! -german-

It's in great condition, few scratches, scrapes and dings but nothing major. All matching except for the bolt.

Factory code is CE 42 so looks to be from 1942 J.P. Sauer & Sohn Suhl. Has two of the Weffenamt 37 markings then on the right the acceptance proof of 280. Stock appears to be sanded so it's hard to make out the markings on it. Here's some pics:

Just bought a BYF 44 K98 in what I think is decent condition. I bought the rifle from a friend who's father had traded for it in the 40's from a service man friend of his. The action and all related parts have matching numbers and the bore is about perfect but I'm a little worried about the stock and butt plate. I can't fins any numbers on the stock and it seem to have a extra sling mount on it the butt plate reads BRG 41. I've shot the rifle and it gets 4"-5" groups from the bench. Any info or help would be great-feedback-
